WHAT WE DO

For over two decades, Bridges to Healing International (BTHI) has provided essential healthcare to more than 7,000 vulnerable youth living in shelters across three countries. As a grassroots organization, we act swiftly and efficiently, making informed decisions to deliver critical healthcare resources where they are needed most. Our close collaboration with partners on the ground allows us to provide personalized care, shaped by thousands of hours spent in shelters, and focused on achievable, tailored solutions that address the unique needs of vulnerable young people.

BRIDGING HEALTHCARE GAPS

BTHI bridges critical gaps in healthcare for youth living in shelters. A cornerstone of our success is our investment in full-time, local nurses, who provide consistent medical care and serve as case managers, guiding young people and marginalized women through significant physical and emotional challenges. By funding healthcare professionals such as nurses and physical therapists, we facilitate collaboration with local clinics, laboratories, and hospitals, ensuring access to comprehensive and specialized care.

We provide funding for Prescriptions, lab tests, and physician consultations and give grants to hire local healthcare caseworkers who create individualized care plans

This cost-effective case management approach leads to improved health outcomes, empowering our partners to focus on education and job training while we handle complex health needs.

SPECIALIZED CARE FOR THOSE WITH DISABILITIES

We understand that women with disabilities face heightened challenges due to societal biases and limited access to resources. Our programs provide essential support, including occupational therapy to help them develop vital life skills such as writing and self-care, enabling their successful transition into educational settings. A core part of our mission is to ensure these women play an active role in their healthcare decisions, fostering confidence and independence. Through advocacy and specialized programs, we promote inclusion, empowerment, and equal access to healthcare, breaking down barriers regardless of background, ability, or ethnicity.

HEALTHCARE FOR WOMEN FLEEING FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM) & CHILD MARRIAGE

BTHI provides critical medical care and case management to young women escaping FGM and child marriage. We ensure they receive immediate medical attention upon arrival at shelters, addressing the urgent physical and emotional impacts of their experiences.

The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened healthcare access, increased child marriages, and led to higher school dropout rates, placing additional strain on shelters and families. Our team provides tailored support to help these women navigate their health challenges and the emotional aftermath of abuse and family separation.

SUPPORT FOR SINGLE MOTHERS RAISING CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL HEALTH NEEDS

BTHI extends support to single mothers in communities where we operate shelter programs. These women face immense challenges while raising children with disabilities or HIV/AIDS under severe economic hardship.

Through our in-house nurses and healthcare professionals, we provide oversight and follow-up care, ensuring these mothers receive the support they need to care for their children. Our goal is to contribute to the community’s vision of healthcare equity, offering marginalized women the resources to build healthier futures for their families.

DETECTION AND TREATMENT OF NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES (NTDs)

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are a significant yet often overlooked health challenge in shelters. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted mass drug administration programs, exacerbating the prevalence of these diseases. BTHI has successfully implemented testing and treatment initiatives for conditions such as: Chagas disease, Zika virus, Dengue fever, Schistosomiasis and Soil-transmitted helminth infections, including hookworm, Ascaris, and whipworm. By addressing these neglected diseases, we improve overall health and well-being, ensuring young people receive the treatment they need to thrive.
